This is my second Top Ten Tuesday participating post (the previous one was for Valentine’s Day back in February). And though I’m getting better at it – at least this one was posted on the right day of the week – I’m still sliding in late, just under the wire. In any case, I was really feeling this week’s prompt: a look back at the first half of the year by listing my top ten favorite reads of 2018 to date.
Since I have already posted reviews for most of these, I’ll just link back to my original posts. That way, if you want to read my full thoughts on any of them, it’ll be easy peasy, and this post can stay nice and concise. Haha.
First, I want to do two nonfiction honorable mentions. I am just now starting to read more nonfiction, and it’s a genre that I’m still getting used to. So, to be honest, even my favorite nonfiction reads don’t land in my top ten overall reads. It’s just personal preference. However, I feel like I would be remiss in not highlighting two that were particularly awesome (I gave both 5 stars), albeit in super different ways.
And now, onto the “real” list. Enjoy! (In case you care about these specifics, they are listed in reverse favorite order, starting with #10 and ending with my #1 most favoritest book of the year…and possibly of the last couple years.)
This was so fun to do! I loved revisiting all the books I’ve read this year to try and pick these top ones. Though the top 5 or so were super obvious to me, things got tough with the rest. I’m also pleased to see how diverse the genres are – I’ve really been reading all over. There’s also some fairly good representation in the authors, which is something I have been consciously trying to get more of this year. It’s been a great reading year for me and I cannot wait to see what the second half brings.
Do you see any here that would also make your list? See any that you want to read? Have any suggestions for me moving forwards? Leave me a comment – I want to know it all!
The Astonishing Color of After is in my top ten too! I just loved everything about that book.

Right?! It was just so gorgeous. I feel like it was just so visually striking, even though it was a book (and thus word-based) and not a typical visual art piece, and that just blew me away.

Yes! I have no idea how Emily X.R. Pan did it, but she definitely made it a book that will stick out in my mind as beautiful and colorful!

Educated was really good! I just put Dark Matter on my TBR per a friends recommendation! And, I am so glad The Kiss Quotient is getting so much buzz – its so well deserved. Hope the rest of our year is as good as the first half!

I don’t know what I was expecting, but it just really blew me away. I loved it so much! I wish I had been able to read it in high school – it would have been huge for me then. But I still loved it now, of course. 🙂

I really want to read Radio Silence and Circe, so yay for those being in your top ten. I own Furiously Happy but still need to read it. I like the author’s blog/social media. 🙂

I haven’t read any of these but that book The strange and beautiful sorrows of Ava Lavender has a gorgeous cover and sounds like something I would enjoy. And Furiously Happy.
It’s always good to look back and remember the books you’ve enjoyed I can never pick the best.

I (obvs) recommend both! But Ava Lavender was just…the best kind of magical realism, if you are into that.

I really liked Girls Burn Brighter, and loved The Power and Furiously Happy! We seem to have similar reading taste. I definitely want to read Circe.

I loved Girls Burn Brighter and The Power; def favorites of the first part of the year. My absolute favorite so far though has been Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. I also loved A Little in Love With Everyone by Genevieve Hudson. I reviewed both on my blog if you want to check them out! Thanks for sharing – this was a fun post!

I keep hearing about Circe, think I am going to have to find some time to pick it up and get reading! Especially if it is your number one choice!

I highly recommend it! It’s not super fast paced, though there is definitely a lot of action, it’s just the perfect combination of awesome character, drama of the gods, and some seriously gorgeous writing. If you decide to go for it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
